Admission requirements

To be admitted you need a high school / secondary school diploma equivalent to Dutch havo, vwo or mbo-4 level (for more information about the value of your diploma you can go to: www.Nuffic.nl).
In our selection procedure for students the following aspects play an important role: creativity, vision, visual powers, curiosity, drive, self-confidence, the power to reflect, flexibility, skills, and an open mind.

Admission into a higher level?

Do you think you are eligible for admission into a higher level (in the 2nd or 3rd year), for instance because you have already finished an academic course? You can state this on your admission form. The admissions committee will take your statement into consideration. A propaedeutic certificate or a finished academic course elsewhere will not (automatically) guarantee admission into a higher level.
You will follow the first round of the admissions procedure as described below. We will also ask you to write us a letter in which you will offer a clear motivation as to why you want to be admitted to a higher level and in which department(s) you want to be placed. The committee will use your portfolio presentation to decide if you can proceed to the presentation round for higher-level starters on 29 June 2012. During this presentation round you will present your work to the department(s) of your choice. However, this does not mean that placement is guaranteed. You will receive a decision on your placement within a week after presentation.
If your portfolio presentation proves insufficient for admission into a higher level, but is sufficient to allow you to apply for the first year, the admissions committee will contact you.
As an International student you can hand in or send in your portfolio presentation before 1 March 2012.

The first selection round: introduction, who are you?

In order to get to know you, your views and your capacity better, we want to ask you to present yourself and your work in a portfolio presentation.

Portfolio presentation

You will present yourself and your work in 20 pages. Copy your portfolio presentation to an unused usb-stick. (You can find a manual below)

What do we want to see:

  • Page 1: Introduction: who are you? (show us a photograph of yourself and introduce yourself)
  • Pages 2 - 15: Portfolio work: make a selection of some of your recent work (dating back no further than 3 years). We would really like to see what you have done so far. Not just end products or ideas, but the process as well. Show us the way you think; how do you reach an idea?
  • Page 16: What, according to you, is a good product (show us) and why and what, according to you, is a bad product (show us) and why?
  • Page 17: What would you like to change about the product you think is bad, and show us?
  • Page 18: Who or what has been an inspiration to you and why?
  • Page 19: What made you decide to apply for admission to Design Academy Eindhoven and what is your motivation: why you?
  • Page 20: State your name, address, mobile number and e-mail address.
The committee members will be judging: creativity, vision, visual powers, power to reflect, and skills.

Manual for Creating a Portfolio Presentation

1. Create your portfolio presentation in Microsoft Powerpoint (PC), Apple Keynote (Mac) or a programme such as Adobe Indesign or Adobe Illustrator.
Save or export your 20-page presentation as a PDF file (depending on the software you use).
2. Do not hand in a series of separate documents, but collect them into one 20-page PDF file.
3. Take care to save your PDF file in ‘print quality’ (i.e. not in the lowest resolution).
4. Give your file a logical name: ‘Portfolio_First Name_Last Name_Date.pdf’.
5. Copy the final file onto an unused usb-stick (standard Windows formatted, NOT Apple formatted).
6. Give the stick a new computer name: your First Name_Last Name.
7. Label the stick with a sticker stating your full name and telephone number.

What do you bring along or send us:

What do we need from you in order to be able to judge your portfolio presentation?
• A (marked) usb-stick with your presentation of you / your work. Your USB-stick will become property of the academy.
• A completely filled in application form (please write clearly and in print; download it from: http://studielink.designacademy.nl, please note: both sides of the form must be completed)

Delivering your presentation to the academy or sending it in

You can come to the academy and hand in your portfolio presentation (usb-stick) and application form). You will also be welcome to do so during the open days on Wednesday 21 December 2011 (from 11.00am to 4.00pm).
You can also send in your portfolio presentation (usb-stick) and application form to the academy, f.a.o. the Admissions Committee: PO box 2125, 5600 CC Eindhoven, the Netherlands.
As an International candidate you can hand in or send in your portfolio presentation before 1 March 2012.

Results

Within one month you will receive notification via e-mail telling you if you are through to the second round or if you have been rejected.
If you have been rejected, this is where your admission for this academic year stops. Of course you can take part in a new round of admissions next academic year.

The second selection round: meeting the committee

The second round consists of a face-to-face with the committee members and a presentation of your interpretation of the home assignment and your own work (portfolio and/or other work). The second round will take one half-day session. Your invitation will give you all the information you need. There will be a number of fellow candidates experiencing this half day with you. Your presentation will take 15 minutes.
The committee will consist of two (coordinating) tutors. The interviews for the coming academic year will be held on 15 and 16 May 2012. You will receive an invitation for either of these days. For international students: Please take into account that you may need a visa during your stay in the Netherlands!

The Home Assignment

‘A LITTLE GIFT OF TIME’
Design a product or service with which you can offer a person some time. It could be a one-off gift, a 5 minute gift / an hour’s gift / a daily / permanent / symbolic / poetic one, or a very practical gift. Choose a person whom you would like very much to give the gift of time. Explore the way this person deals with their time, surroundings, work, and life, and see where your design or solution might make or find time.
It is important that you take time in getting to know this person (even if you choose a relative, there is always more to them than you may think); ask them a lot of questions / follow them / observe them well.
Sometimes it can be special to get to know a family member better, because this assignment will make you ask questions you would not normally ask, but it can also be very exciting to choose a person you do not know at all. The only restrictions are that you cannot pick a fictional person and that you must make actual contact.
Find a design problem that will tie in with your own creative talent. If you are technically skilled and have a practical mindset, make sure you can use these characteristics. If you are a thinker or a philosopher, you may choose a solution that might deal with, for instance, the meaning of time, instead of with practical characteristics of time.

The Result:

You will create a visual report of your research and of the person you have selected using both images and text (for instance, sketches, photographs, film, text, blogs, animation, scale models, comic strips etcetera).
Using your findings about this person as your guideline you will come up with an end product that will have a broader use: a service or a product (so the person is a means, not and end!). Show us your process and your end result in a series of models, sketches, several variations, in a film, et cetera.
Should you wish to present your work digitally, you should bring your own laptop (with a full battery).

We will use the following criteria to assess the assignment and the talk:
creativity, vision, visual powers, curiosity, drive, self-confidence, the power to reflect, flexibility, skill, and openness to feedback.

What do you bring along for the second round:

  • Your home assignment (including everything, i.e.: sketches, ideas, models, et cetera)
  • Your own work
  • An A4 sheet with a photograph of yourself, your name, and 2 photographs of your home assignment
  • Your certificate/diploma (if it has already been awarded to you), your passport and a copy of your passport
Within three weeks you will receive the results of your admission talk in the post. You will either be admitted, rejected, or placed on the reserve list. The reserve list will be retained until the end of the second week of September. Admission is valid only for the academic year in which you have applied. Only if you fail to pass your final exams (secondary school) will your admission be valid for a further year.

Apply for registration via Studielink
If you are accepted, it is important that you apply for registration as a student as soon and correctly as possible. Via designacademy.studielink.nl you can apply for registration and connect this registration to Design Academy Eindhoven, making sure that your personal data, necessary for the application procedure, is sent to Design Academy Eindhovens student administration.

As you have been accepted to the bachelor course, you will have to choose for the full time course option (the part-time course is not on offer, but remains an option on the Studielink site; please ignore this option). You will be starting in the first year of the bachelor course; you don't have to click anything to confirm this, as it is set as default within Studielink. Please go through all further steps that Studielink offers you. It will lead you to the final phase of the tuition fee payment.

Every step you take within the registration process of Studielink, you will receive an email to confirm. Please make sure that you have sufficient space in your email inbox. And, please check your inbox regularly for messages by either Studielink or the student administration of Design Academy Eindhoven and make sure that you react to them promptly.

Payment of tuition fee
Even though you have given payment details (for payment in full or in installements) in Studielink, you will have to take care of the tuition fee payment before August 1. Therefore you will receive a form for authorisation of payment of your tuition fee, at your home address. The address we will be using is the one you have registered in Studielink.
Payment of tuition fee is crucial for finalising your registration. So take care of this in time!

Send necessary documents to Student Administration DAE

Please bear in mind that you will still have to send in a copy of your passport (and visa - if applicable) and a copy of your high school or other relevent diploma. Deadline for these documents is the same as the tuition fee payment, namely August 1 - 2012
You will also need to get your address registered at the town hall, where you are living. You will then receive a so-called GBA (Gemeentelijk Basis Administratie). This GBA has to be given to student administration by September 1.
